Sarah Kidder – Principal, Senior Designer
My design philosophy is simple: It’s your home so it should reflect your style, taste, wants and needs. My job is to help you create and achieve your vision.
I always strive to give my clients a space that is reflective of who they are, not who I am. Interior design is generally considered a luxury service, but you can have a beautiful, functional space that is perfectly you, without breaking the bank – all you really need is a little imagination and determination. That’s where I come in!
So who am I?
I’m the mother of three messy children (two human, one canine) and wife to a maddeningly neat husband, so I understand the challenges of designing and decorating a space that is practical, durable and that, of course, looks great too!
Right now I’m living amongst my own renovations as we slowly tear apart our 1970’s row house. It’s not always easy, but I have a lot of energy and I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty – I actually installed the basement floor myself.
I’m an 80’s child with a love of Jem and the Holograms, classic horror films, tattoo culture, bright colours, and the unexpected. My haircut and colour change constantly and I always have coffee with me.
By my appearance, most people assume my design style is modern or contemporary and although I really like those styles, I’m a traditionalist at heart. I love history, bird iconography, distressed woods, damask wallpaper, Victorian and Edwardian architecture and antiques of all kinds.
I graduated with a diploma from the Interior Decorating program at Algonquin College in 2005 and enrolling in the program turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I’ve been a guest expert at both the Ottawa Home and Design Show and the Ottawa Home Renovations Show, a guest speaker and instructor in the Residential Décor program at Algonquin College, and have been quoted in and/or had my work shown in Chatelaine, the Ottawa Citizen STYLE magazine, and Ottawa at Home magazine, the Ottawa Citizen, Metro, and the News EMC.
Sarah Kidder Design is the NKBA 2015 Design Excellence 1st place award winner in the ‘Look for Less – Bathroom’ category, 6 time consecutive winner of the HomeStars ‘Best Of’ award for Interior Decorating/Design, the 2015 HomeStars ‘Giving Back’ award winner, a 2016 winner of the ‘Best of Houzz’ award for Design, and 2014 and 2016 winner of the ‘Best of Houzz‘ award for customer satisfaction.
After 10 years in the design industry I can confidently say that my training and experience ensure that the job is done right, to your tastes, every time.
