We’ve Been a Busy Bunch!

Phew, is it already July?  Time flies when you’re having fun, right?  SKD has been busy, busy, busy with all sorts of exciting projects!  Here’s a peek at just a few of the things we’ve been working on lately (check back for longer posts on each of these!):

Model Homes

We completed 3 model townhomes for Claridge at the end of May in Barrhaven’s Westpointe Village.  As much as I love private clients, this was a really fun change of pace.  And by change of pace, I mean we designed, furnished and styled 3 full homes in less than a month.  Continue reading “We’ve Been a Busy Bunch!”

What is a Boob? Yeah, I Said Boob.

Until recently, I had a co-op student from Algonquin College’s Interior Decorating program.  I love Layla to bits.  We met while we were working together at Randall’s in Bells Corners.  She was still in high school, deciding what she wanted to do with her life, I was slowly building my business, but we’re both so silly and chatty that we got along instantly, despite the 11 year age gap.  She expressed some interest in the decorating program, and since I had graduated from it, I gave her some tips on getting accepted (it’s very, very competitive).  Fast forward two years, and she’s just finished the program and I couldn’t be more proud of her – so much so, that I’ve hired her part time as a junior!

Cornwall’s Hip Happening Hotspots! (Part 2)

So a few weeks ago, I took a little road trip with my co-op student-turned-part-timer, Layla, to Cornwall, where I grew up, to check out a great new store – Neo Vintage Furniture.  After a browse and a chat, it was chow time so we headed downtown to a newish restaurant, Schnitzel’s, which just happens to be run by a few of my former co-workers from the Cornwall Square mall.

I met Joey while working together at Urban Trade.  His was the only VW bug I’ve ever ridden in (it was one of the brand new ones back in 1998-ish) and the only bright yellow car I’ve ever been in! Continue reading “Cornwall’s Hip Happening Hotspots! (Part 2)”

Cornwall’s Hip Happening Hotspots! (Part 1)

I recently took a short road trip ‘back home’ with my co-op student, Layla, to check out some new hot spots I kept hearing about.  ‘Back home’ is Cornwall, Ontario, a smallish city of 46,000 about an hour from Ottawa.  I lived in Cornwall for the first 21 years of my life before moving permanently to Ottawa in 2003.  Cornwall is a nice little city with a beautiful waterfront, great schools and phenomenal housing prices, but unless you’re raising a family or retired, there’s not a whole lot going on.  Since my mom moved to Ottawa in ’06, there haven’t been a lot of reasons to return.

And then, there was. Continue reading “Cornwall’s Hip Happening Hotspots! (Part 1)”

I Love/Hate Technology!

Hello!

Just want to let you know I’m having some pretty big email/connectivity problems right now so if you’ve sent me an email and I haven’t replied or you’re waiting for something, I apologize for the delay!

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and the iPhone 5, changed from a web-based email server (is that even the right word?) to Microsoft Outlook  and changed my domain name in preparation for this new website and blog.  I am beyond dumb with all this technological stuff (although I can program a Commodore 64 like a pro – because that’s useful, right?) so I’ve had some help but for Continue reading “I Love/Hate Technology!”

Ask Sarah: “It’s been keeping me up at night…”

Sherri asks:  “I have a question about our new home that’s been keeping me up at night.  We have a completely open concept great room with cathedral ceilings and an open kitchen and dining room on the opposite end.  Our plan is to have natural pine on the ceiling in this big open space and I want to do white kitchen cabinetry with a slatted/beadboard sort of look and a darker chocolate brown countertop. The one thing that is absolutely throwing me off is what colour do I paint the walls throughout? With it being such a huge open space the colour should go throughout as it would look bizarre otherwise. Continue reading “Ask Sarah: “It’s been keeping me up at night…””

Here we go!

Welcome to my brand spanking new blog!

It’s my third one.

That’s right.  Hoping third time’s the charm.  I like to write, I don’t necessarily like to blog.  There’s too much pressure, I think.  I want to write not only when I have something to say (and if you know me IRL, that’s kind of all the time) but also when I have something GOOD to say.  I’m hoping you’ll become a Constant Reader and that you’ll learn something from me and that I’ll learn something from you.  If there’s anything you want to read about or if you have a burning design question, drop me a line and I’ll include it in a future post.
