Time Travelling with SKD!

Happy New Year!  I started 2015 off by time travelling.

Ok, not exactly.  I was dreaming about New Year’s Eve 1999 on New Year’s Day (we didn’t get home from our friend’s house until after 1am, so it was technically already the 1st when I went to bed).  In my dream, I had somehow time travelled back to high school (why we were in school on NYE, I don’t know, but hey, dreams are like that) and was panicking because 17 year old me was there and 32 year old me was there and OH MY GOD, I’VE CREATED A PARADOX! A RIFT IN THE TIME-SPACE CONTINUUM!  WHAT IF WE MEET!?

Did I mention that I’d watched Back to the Future I, II and III with the kids recently?

It’s That Time Again…

The summer has flown by, as it tends to do, and the fall Home and Design Show is upon us once more!  SKD is sharing a booth again this year, but this time only with Right Angle Renovations.  We found the booth last year a little…expansive…so we scaled it back a bit.  Not a lot, but a little. 🙂  We’ve got a 20’x10′ booth in spot number 421 – right in an aisle.  Let me tell you, trying to design a 20′ long living space with only a wall and a half is NOT EASY!  Luckily, I’ve got friends in all the right places and Randall’s (where I used to work) has graciously donated some furnishings for the booth.  Thank goodness, because I haven’t had enough spare time to go shopping! In Memory of Joanne

This is a hard post to write.  Today I attended the funeral of one of my long time clients.

In the spring of 2011, I met Joanne and her husband Bob at the Ottawa Home and Garden Show and they hired me to design their kitchen.  It started modestly, but quickly grew to include the whole main floor!  We spent months together planning for and working through the extensive renovations.   Continue reading “In Memory of Joanne”

If You Missed Me at the Ottawa Home Reno Show, This Post is for You!

This past weekend was the Ottawa Home Renovations Show, and the special projects manager had asked me in November if I was interested in presenting.  I had previously presented two seminars at the Ottawa Home and Design Show in September and despite my nervousness about public speaking, was very well received so I said that of course I would present at the January show!  It was much easier to get up there this time!

Happy New Year! Well, a Month Ago….

Happy New Year everyone!  I know it was almost a month ago, but it still feels like the beginning of a new and exciting year.  I took 2 whole weeks off work (mostly anyway…) and it was so nice being able to relax in between the birthdays, Christmas parties, New Years parties and an engagement party.  So, yeah, not that relaxing at all.  But tons of fun, nonetheless!

December was significantly busier than usual as I was trying to wrap up two renovations before the holidays.  They didn’t quite end up finished, but finished enough that both clients could enjoy their time off in peace and quiet and non-renovation mess.

Something Yummy This Way Comes…

This is not a design related post.  In the interest of being interesting, I’m including this recipe I think you might be interested in.  This is what I like to call “C Soup”.  I’ve also called it “Kitchen Sink Soup”, as in everything’s in it, but the kitchen sink.  This is the time of year where the eternal question of what to make for dinner makes you want to cry.  It’s cold, it’s dark, it’s gloomy and all you want to do is snuggle up with a book.  I know I’m not the only one who comes home from work tired and hungry and WAY too lazy to make something halfway healthy.  This is my yummy go-to on those days!

The House That Broke My Heart

A little over a year or so ago, on one of our many Sunday family jaunts to Arnprior, we drove past a huge late Victorian house on a giant piece of property.  There was a sign on the lawn that said “For Sale by Owner”, so I immediately created a new contact in my iPhone to secretly call the owner later and inquire about the property.  My husband doesn’t feel the way I feel about Victorians and before I even had a chance to call he somehow figured me out and told me not to bother because we weren’t buying it.  I promptly forced myself to forget about the house.

SKD was at the Ottawa Home and Design Show

It’s Wednesday and I still feel like a zombie!  Neeeed….moooore….coooooffffeeeeee….. This past weekend was the Ottawa Home and Design Show and what a fun (and exhausting) weekend it was!

In past years, I’ve worked the show with Custom Home Interiors, who I share office space with, but this year I decided to go it alone!  I didn’t stay alone for long, though.  I asked friend and colleague Dan Smith, owner of Strokes of Genius painting and Right Angle Renovations (their site is still under construction – no pun intended!) what his experience had been with the shows in past years because it ain’t cheap!  Continue reading “SKD was at the Ottawa Home and Design Show”
